Whale Swim Experience in Amami Oshima! Grateful to the HSA Handicapped Scuba Association!

Good evening! I’m Okada, the store manager.

I took an early spring break and traveled to Amami Oshima to participate in a whale swim event hosted by the HSA Handicapped Scuba Association( @hsajapan ).

It seems that I arrived during the coldest week of the year in Amami Oshima—there was even hail on the day I got there! It was chilly enough that even a light down jacket wasn’t quite warm enough.

The whale swim event took place over two days with a chartered boat. During this season, humpback whales visit the warm waters of Amami Oshima to raise their young. We had many opportunities to observe mother and baby whales, but swimming alongside them was quite challenging. Even for able-bodied participants, there were only a few chances to swim with the whales. My son and the other participants with disabilities only had one opportunity, but they were still able to witness the majestic whales up close. (The video was filmed by HSA Representative Tatsuo Ota.)

The fact that my son, who has severe cerebral palsy and cannot sit up on his own, was able to experience this is all thanks to the dedicated volunteer staff at HSA. They provided thorough support, from helping with wetsuits and equipment to ensuring safety in the water. I am truly grateful for their efforts.

If you or someone you know has a disability and wants to explore the underwater world, I highly recommend reaching out to HSA ( @hsajapan.miki ) !

Additionally, this year marks the 10th anniversary of my son’s journey in adaptive diving. If you have any questions, I’d be happy to share what I know—please feel free to ask! 😊

On another note, I brought back some raw cane sugar and Tankan chili from Amami Oshima, and I will be placing them in the self-service corner starting this Saturday. Feel free to use them to enhance the flavors of your coffee or curry!

Also, Fukiko@fufufuki7 ) kindly shared yuzu from her family’s home, which I have turned into enzyme syrup! This weekend, Tankan oranges from Amami Oshima will also arrive for enzyme syrup making. It’s enzyme season here! Please look forward to the finished products. ❣️

We look forward to seeing you on Thursday (February 13, 2025)!
